As soon as I found out Mark Ronson was on the lineup for Summadayze, I knew I had to go. I'm not normally a fan of DJ music but I absolutely adore Mark Ronson. It may be because he's a good looking British man, but he is also a phenomenally talented song writer, mixer and producer. I was first drawn to his music because he always has a healthy dose of brass and horns in it and slowly but surely he became one of my favourite artists.
The first time I saw him live he played with The Business Intl, the supergroup who he wrote and performed his third album. As well as producing his own music, he also produces other artists' music such as Amy Winehouse, Christina Aguilera, Adele and Bruno Mars. Overall he's one amazingly talented man.
Unfortunately at Summadayze he only played a DJ set, but he packed it full of his hits and had some amazing special guest performances. The first special guest was Spank Rock who originally performed on the song The Bike Song. He also rapped a couple more songs and got the crowd all fired up.
His second guest, and the one I was most excited about, was Andrew Wyatt. He is the lead singer of Miike Snow and was also part of The Business Intl and performed on the song Somebody To Love Me. He is the seediest looking man but has an incredible voice. He toured with Mark Ronson last time he was in Australia and performed the Miike Snow song Animal on stage at Future Music Festival.
The third guest was a surprise guest, and what a surprise it was. Melbourne's own Daniel Merriweather burst onto the stage to perform his hit Stop Me which Mark Ronson produced, as well as some of Mark Ronson's other songs. I think only about 10% of the crowd actually knew who he was, but that didn't matter because at least they were being exposed to some decent music, not the dance crap that most of the other DJs were playing.
Mark Ronson ended the night with his worldwide hit Valerie as a fitting tribute to the late Amy Winehouse. This is probably one of my favourite songs of all time and I love Amy Winehouse. It got me thinking a lot about the new year and what I want to achieve. I feel like I wasted a lot of 2012 and I don't want 2013 to be the same. So far it's off to a pretty good start though.
R.I.P Amy Winehouse. The world misses your talent.
