Yesterday I attended Harvest Festival. It's never really interested me that much in the past but I think that's just because I didn't know much about it. My friend Sam and I decided to volunteer at the festival for something cool to do and to get free entry into the festival. Possibly one of the best decisions of my life. This festival was absolutely amazing. Possibly the best one I've ever been to! Because of this, I'm finding it very difficult to collate the photos into one blog post, so I've decided to do a series of them. Today is the first in the installment and based on the crazy beautiful, eccentric and mind-blowing music.
We finished our shift at 3pm, so we got to see a lot of the main bands. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't get to see the Dandy Warhols because they finished at 3pm, but I have seen them before so I'll live. We wandered the grounds for a bit watching any bands that caught our attention. The Silversun Pickups were the first band we saw because they were conveniently on when we were eating our lunch. Truthfully I've never been a big fan, but it was great music to chill to at lunch time.
We'd both heard a lot about the next band, Mike Patton's Mondo Cane, but had never actually heard any of his music. What a surprise we were in for. It was a mixture of spanish/flamenco, rock, jazz and kind of screamo. It was absolutely amazing and were completely in love with the whole production! After we also saw Beirut and Cake for the same reason, because we'd heard so much about them.
We had to split up at one point because we couldn't decide which band we wanted to see next, but there was no way I was going to miss Ben Folds Five. My life is complete now that I've seen Brick performed live. It's one of my favourite songs of all time so it was a blessing to experience it. Half way through the performance of Brick, the entire audience formed a huge circle much like a death circle, but instead of bowling people over, they all just hugged and soaked up the awe-inspiring experience. It was a little annoying because it pushed me away from the stage, but at the same time really beautiful to see all these people coming together over the love for this one song.
We then saw Beck, who's bluesy sound was really cool to see. I definitely recommend seeing him even though it's taken him 10 years to tour Australia again.
As night fell, we weaved our way to the front of the stage for Sigur Ros. A band who I was not too happy to have to watch because their music really bores me. But that was until I saw them live. They were so captivating and beautiful to watch. I probably still wont listen to their recorded music, but they were electrifying to see live. You couldn't help but stand in silence and soak up the spellbinding performance.
We finished the night by dancing like crazy people at Santigold who, as aways, was incredibly entertaining. At one point, she asked audience members to join her on stage to dance but so many people got up that they had to cut the song short to get people off the stage before the performance could continue. It was a weird thing to watch haha. Santigold handled it with grace, and her and her 'ladies' (backup dancers) continued like nothing had happened.
Harvest delivered some great memories and beautiful music. I'll be uploading a blog everyday for the next couple of days covering the rest of Harvest. This is probably going to be the longest. Hope you enjoyed it.
