Keystone, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial & Deadwood

November 12, 2015

Today was a crazy busy day. We did all of the things. We were staying in a little cowboy town called Keystone which is basically at the base of Mt Rushmore. It's incredibly touristy, but then so is most of the USA.
That morning we got up pretty early to head over to Mt Rushmore before the crowds descend. It was lucky we did because when we arrived it was almost empty, and when we left there was about 15 busloads of tourists. Mt Rushmore was another pinch me moment. It's one of the most iconic places in the USA and has been used in countless movies. We went for a walk on a trail around the base of the monument, squirrel spotting as we went. I think spent a good 15 minutes stalking a chipmunk to get the perfect photo.
From there we went to the incredible Crazy Horse Memorial, which is currently being carved into a giant slab of rock. You can see a statue of it to see what it will eventually look like, but I don't think it's going to be completed in my lifetime.
For lunch we stopped at a town called Deadwood, which from the outside seemed like a sleepy little country town, but when you walked down the main drag, it was covered with crappy tourist shops. Was still amazing to cruise around in though. We stayed there for a couple of hours before heading back to Keystone for the night.
