St Kilda Festival Live n Local

February 9, 2014

This week I've put in over 75 hours of time working at the St Kilda Festival for the second year in a row. The St Kilda Festival is a landmark event on the Melbourne events calendar being one of the biggest free street festivals in the Southern Hemisphere. Most people will be familiar with Festival Sunday, which is happening as I type this, however I was working at the Live n Local week. This is where bands from the local area play free gigs all throughout St Kilda, and this year South Melbourne and Port Melbourne.
Although I was pretty much in the same place the whole week, I did manage to sneak away a couple of times and check out some of the local bands. This band, named Zeon, played in one of the graffiti splattered laneways of St Kilda and pulled quite a crowd with their quirky indie Irish folk music.
Probably my favourite band I saw this week was Up Up Away, a neo-soul/funk group at my favourite St Kilda venue, Veludo. I hadn't heard of them before and I went to the gig because I knew Veludo always have amazing live music, and I wasn't wrong. Up Up Away also mentioned that they will be releasing their EP soon so I think I'm definitely going to have to look out for that and try and see them live again.
The last band I managed to catch was also at Veludo. The band Fulton Street was recommended to me by someone who had a hand in booking all the bands, and once again, I was blown away by how talented they are. You can never go wrong with a band that has horns and brass in my books.
