Freya Bennett | The Marvellous Reject Girl | Interview

November 27, 2013

Melbourne musician Freya Bennett sat down to A some Q's about her music career. With the release of her first EP The Marvellous Reject Girl and a string of sold out shows at the Melbourne Fringe Festival under her belt, she's now gearing up to head over to the city of churches (Radelaide) to take on the largest annual arts festival in the Southern Hemisphere, the Adelaide Fringe Festival. Freya is also having one last gig in Melbourne before she travels west, click here for details.

Tell us a little about yourself…
I am a Melbourne singer songwriter who loves to paint! I just got a kitten who is currently trying to help me answer these questions
 E
.lbggggvt..
Thanks Phoenix.
I teach music in the evenings and I write music during the day. My dream is to be a professional singer-songwriter and film composer.

Describe you music in a tweet
Quirky, contemporary, indie, pop music. I like to tell a story with my lyrics and I like to imagine movie scenes to go with my songs!

Who is The Marvellous Reject Girl
The Marvellous Reject Girl is me. I wish it was more mysterious but it comes from a time when I was trying to get some love in the form of a government grant. I tried many times and continued to be rejected so I thought, time to take it into my own hands and really draw on that time and use it to spur me on.

Tell us about your song-writing process…
I definitely draw on my own experiences. Most of my songs are about things that have happened to me in my life that I felt inspired enough to write about. I have a few songs on the album that are inspired by friends experiences and some quirky songs where I just made a story up.
The process of writing songs is interesting and I haven’t really thought about it but I usually just sit down and muck around, lyrics come out and then later I polish it up.
What was it like making The Tiger video clip?
The Tiger video was such fun! It was interesting as I have never really done any acting so I found that a bit tricky but I did really enjoy it! It only took a weekend which was great and I had a great team working round the clock! I worked with some students from RMIT who used the video as their final project. Sebastian Tan, the director was amazing and had everything done so quickly. He works hard but has an amazing amount of talent.

How did it feel to sell out your Melbourne Fringe Festival shows?
It felt amazing! I had no idea it would happen! I was feeling confident enough to sell out maybe two of the four shows but I thought, ‘how many people do I know who will come to this?’ and I really didn’t expect word to get round and strangers to turn up.  It was a surreal feeling and one that I will always hold on to.
What did you grow up listening to?
I listened to a lot of classical music and the Beatles. The Beatles are still my favourite band. I went through the terrible phase of listening to Hanson and Aqua and all those, but I am sure they have their place and have helped shape me in some way.

What are you listening to right now?
I am listening to a lot of Laura Marling at the moment, she is such a beautiful song writer. I also loved MS MR's first album. And I am always listening to Lisa Mitchell and Lianne La Havas as well.

What’s next for Freya Bennett?
Next up is taking the show to the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2014. We have two shows booked at the lovely Tandanya Café on the 4th and 5th of March. We are very excited and are having an Adelaide Fringe fundraiser gig on the 6th of December at bar 303 in Northcote, Melbourne.
Apart from that, next year will be all about playing music, writing songs and hopefully a small amount of recording.
