Improv Conspiracy | Melbourne International Comedy Festival

April 11, 2013

I've had a revelation this week. Normally when I create my itinerary for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, it consists of all the big-name, international comedians, but I hardly ever end up going to their shows because I don't have enough money to pay the sometimes pricey ticket fees. It really shouldn't have taken me 4 years to work out that the local gigs are where it's at! This festival I've been to two local gigs and I've laughed my ass off the whole way through. And for the same price of one international comedian's show, you can see 3 or 4 local shows and discover some cool new venues!
Last night I went along to The Improv Conspiracy, a Melbourne based improvisation group, who not only have hilarious shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Melbourne Fringe Festival, but all year round. For the MICF, The Improv Conspiracy use the improvisation format called The Harold where you're entertained with imaginative and witty interlocking stories based off one audience-provided suggestion.
I have to admit, I probably never would've gone to this show if I didn't know one of the very talented performers in it, but I'm so glad I did. I've always admired people who can come up with witty come-backs in the moment, because I'm one of those people who thinks about a situation 10 minutes later and says "damn, I should've said that!" It was quite unbelievable that this show wasn't scripted at all! They all seemed to be able to read each others minds.

Also, The Improv Conspiracy are performing at possibly the coolest place in Melbourne called The Croft Institute. Croft (as us locals call it) is an old mental institution converted into a bar and performance space. It's a tad creepy but really awesome and well worth going to! The Improv Conspiracy have shows running as part of the MICF until April 20th, but as I said before, also have shows running all year! Check out their website for all the details!
