Yesterday was the long awaited launch of Melbourne's newest fashion district The Emporium, which boasts some of the worlds biggest retailers, a lot of which have never had stores in Australia before. As soon as I walked in, it felt like I'd suddenly moved states. The Emporium looks almost exactly like Westfield Sydney with smooth and stylish interiors and plenty of natural light.
As I said, there are a lot of international retailers opening up at The Emporium, and this massive line was for the one and only Uniqlo, which almost had as much hype around it as H&M did. I had a quick squiz in Uniqlo and thought it had great menswear, although the only womens-wear I liked were the 100% silk shirts. I may have to splurge and get one.
I understand that these big international retailers like Uniqlo and Adidas are meant to be the main attractions, but in all honesty, they were blown out of the water by the local designer stores. The Emporium has a whole wing dedicated to our local designers such as Sass & Bide, Gorman, Camilla and Zimmermann. I have to say though my favourite store was hands down Shakuhachi. That store is very dangerous and I could probably buy everything!
At the moment the centre is half empty because we're still waiting on the likes of Kate Spade, Ted Baker, Victoria's Secret and Topshop to open up, but when it's all open, it'll be amazing. The only other thing I'll say about it is don't go expecting a bargain, as the name suggests, it's very much high end shopping.
